As the vintage dance scene in Reading has grown, we have been lucky enough to also see a rise in the number of vintage bands based in Reading offering some amazing swing music. Amber & The Professors

Swing, Jazz and modern songs with a Vintage twist | Site


There’s a new band in town. And they’re guaranteed to give those tail-feathers a night to remember. Amber and the Professors are a group of swing players with serious expertise and enough sass to sink a battleship, fresh on the dance scene.The group is available to hire for dances, functions, parties and for background music at your bar or restaurant.  The set up can be vocals with piano/guitar, or with full band including drums, bass, kit and an instrumentalist.

Heather Jayne & The Red Shoes

Berkshire based 4 piece playing Soul, Jazz, Blues, Swing and whatever else they can get their hands on. Inst: guitar, double bass, drums vocals, sax & flute.
As the ‘red’ shoes they are lively and fun, but they also come in blue! Heather Jayne & The Blue Shoes blew Reading Swing Exchange away with their extraordinary and soulful acoustic blues set.

IJO Big Band

Based just outside Reading in Tadley the IJO Big Band, short for Innovations Jazz Orchestra, currently consists of 20 regular musicians who enjoy playing big band, swing and jive. They are accompanied by great singers for their Sinatra, Bennett, Fitzgerald and Buble repertoire. The band was formed was formed to capture the very best of this genre of music whilst taking a broad minded approach to the repertoire to include not only some of the greats, but also tune that perhaps don’t get heard too often in big band music including contemporary music and everything in between.The sound of the band in full swing is something to behold.

Ma Bessie and her Pig Foot Band

Formed in 2015 by Reading-based Julia Titus to celebrate the music of the amazing blues singer Bessie Smith, this band will sooth your soul and get all those blues dancers up on the floor with their mix classic blues and jazz tunes from the inter-war years with a selection of original songs and hand-picked covers from the last 50 years of popular music.

Roy Bailey Band

Based in Goring this is a truly big band as they can have up to 25 players allowing them to produce the big band swing sound of the 30’s. With a repertoire that is both traditional and modern, they are a band which never fails to provide excellent songs for dancers (and they love seeing dancers at their gigs so never be shy to get up and swing out!).

The Ding Dong Daddios

Here are 5 sharply dressed, nimble guys yet not one of them is called ‘Mo’. They will fill your ears and your evening with a blend of Jump Jive and Swing, with each song being hand picked and rolled out for your delectation. If you have a party that needs some swing, a dance floor that wants filling and pulse that needs to race or a heart that needs a melting – just call out for these boys. The Ding Dong Daddios deliver every time. This is the quintet that can make any time of day a ‘Saturday Night’ through their combination of instrumental skills and vocal harmony, all evoking a feeling of nostalgia whilst maintaining a keen sense of the ‘now’. Based in Reading, this band has a regular free gig at the Purple Turtle in Reading.

The Silver Heels

The Silver Heels play Charleston and Swing jazz to shake a leg to. Based in Reading they have offer a regular free gig every 3rd Thursday each month (excluding August) at the Global Cafe in Reading.

University of Reading Big Band

Big Band Swing | Site


The University of Reading Big Band is a young, vibrant and active band which performs at balls, dinners, dances and concerts across Berkshire. Primarily a dance band, the Big Band has an extensive library of swing numbers of the 30s, 40s, 50s, some Rock n Roll numbers and some more contemporary jazz and Latin arrangements. The Band is available to hire for a variety of functions including weddings, dances, dinners, balls and award ceremonies.
